Teeth Cleaning
Teeth cleaning is the removal of dental plaque and tartar from teeth to prevent cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. Severe gum disease causes at least one-third of adult tooth loss.

Teeth Brushing
We recommend that you brush daily with a soft toothbrush and floss to remove interdental plaque. Doing this will prevent the build-up of plaque bacteria on the teeth. Excessive plaque can deteriorate the teeth leading to teeth fillings or progress to a root canal or tooth loss. It also can cause periodontal disease, which will require a deep teeth cleaning, and more advanced gum treatments.

Scaling and Root Planing
The deep teeth cleaning, scaling and root planing performed by Dr. Shirin, Thousand Oaks Dentist, occurs below the gum line to remove plaque and bacteria. Root planing smooths the root surfaces so the gums reattach to the root. Usually, this will be accomplished with the use of a mild local anesthetic so your treatment is completely comfortable for you.
The objective of scaling and root planing, otherwise known as conventional periodontal therapy, non-surgical periodontal therapy or deep cleaning, is to remove or eliminate the etiologic agents which cause inflammation: dental plaque, its products and calculus. Removing or eliminating these agents helps to establish a periodontium that is free of disease.
Antibiotics
Periodontal disease is a bacterial disease and the key to controlling it is the effective reduction of harmful bacteria. In addition to deep teeth cleaning, scaling and root planning, the use of antibiotics delivered directly below the gum line at the site of infection may be used. An antibacterial mouth rinse may also be prescribed to control the harmful bacteria.
